People think of a toothache as a problem that they hope will go away. They look at other oral health issues as inconveniences, but do not always worry about them. What many people do not realize is the symptoms they experience are not always something they can ignore.
They are often signs of a problem that can end up causing more trouble. In some cases, the problems they experience with their oral health could end up causing major medical issues and can lead to death.
Dental abscesses are a common problem that is fairly easy to treat. The key to treating an abscess, like almost any other medical condition is to do it at the earliest stages. The longer a person waits for treatment of an abscess, the more danger they put themselves in.
Dental abscesses are painful and can cause a variety of symptoms. An abscess is an infection from bacteria. If the infection stays in the same spot, it is relatively easy to treat. It is when it spreads that problems arise. If the infection gets into the bloodstream, it can spread to other parts of the body including vital organs. It can lead to a widespread infection of the body called sepsis. Any of these conditions can lead to death.
If the infection spreads to the floor of the mouth or the neck it can lead to swelling in these areas. The swelling can eventually block the airway and prevent a person from breathing. Not being able to breathe is a potentially fatal problem.
Oral cancer is a dental problem that has many different causes. Genetics, bad oral hygiene habits and other things can lead to oral cancer. While it is possible to treat oral cancer, it is a potentially fatal disease.
